The quick answer
Stove size is based on room volume—not floor area alone
For a first estimate, multiply the room's length × width × height to calculate its volume. Then adjust for insulation, exposed walls, glazing and open-plan spaces. A typical Irish sitting room often falls around the 4–6kW range, but a large or poorly insulated room may need more.
Always compare the calculator result with the stove's nominal output, not only its maximum output. Nominal output is the more useful indication of normal operation.
Bigger is not automatically better. An oversized stove can make a room uncomfortably hot, encourage inefficient low burning and leave you opening doors or windows to release heat you have paid to produce.

Understanding the result
Typical stove-output bands
These are general shopping bands, not fixed room-size rules. Two rooms with the same dimensions can have different heat requirements because insulation, glazing, exposure and layout all matter.

Size it properly
Five factors that can change the kW you need
- Insulation: Upgraded attic and wall insulation can reduce heat loss considerably compared with an older uninsulated room.
- Ceiling height: A room with a 3-metre ceiling contains more air than the same floor area with a standard ceiling.
- Outside walls and exposure: Detached, end-of-terrace and exposed rooms can lose heat faster.
- Glazing: Large windows and patio doors can increase heat loss, depending on their age and performance.
- Open-plan layout: Heat will travel into connected halls, kitchens or dining spaces, increasing the area the stove is effectively serving.
Why an oversized stove can be a costly mistake
An oversized stove may force you to run it below its intended operating range to keep the room comfortable. Low, slow burning can reduce combustion quality, dirty the glass and contribute to deposits in the flue. Correct sizing helps the appliance operate closer to its designed output.
If you plan to improve the room's insulation, replace windows or close off an open-plan section, consider the room's likely future heat loss—not only its condition today.

How Many Radiators Can a Boiler Stove Heat?
A standard room-heating stove does not heat radiators. To heat radiators, you need a suitable boiler stove connected to a properly designed wet heating system. The key figure is the manufacturer's output to water—not the stove's total output or output to the room.

Irish stove regulations and safety checks
There is no new nationwide 2026 ban on buying a compliant domestic wood-burning stove. The rules currently applying focus on the appliance placed on the market, its installation, the fuel used and safe removal of combustion gases.
Ecodesign compliance
Since 1 January 2022, new wood-only and multi-fuel stoves placed on the EU market must meet Ecodesign requirements for efficiency and environmental performance.
CE marking and documentation
Check for the CE mark and the manufacturer's Declaration of Performance or conformity documentation. Product information should state the nominal heat output and permitted fuel.
Flue, air supply and clearances
Irish Building Regulations Technical Guidance Document J covers heat-producing appliances, combustion air and safe discharge of combustion products. Exact requirements depend on the property and appliance.
Carbon monoxide protection
A suitable carbon monoxide alarm is an essential safety measure, but it is not a substitute for correct installation, ventilation, inspection and maintenance.
Use the correct fuel
Use only the fuel types identified by the stove manufacturer and fuels permitted for sale and use in Ireland. Unsuitable fuel may increase emissions, damage the stove or affect its warranty.
Independent installation
Ganly's does not provide stove installation. Before buying, arrange an assessment with a competent independent installer who can check the chimney, flue, hearth, ventilation and appliance position.

Stove sizing FAQs
Is a 5kW stove enough for my living room?
It may be suitable for many compact or reasonably insulated living rooms, but dimensions alone are not enough. Use the calculator as a starting point and consider insulation, glazing, ceiling height, exposure and connected spaces.
Should I choose the stove's nominal or maximum kW?
Use nominal output for normal room-sizing comparisons. Maximum output can represent short-term peak performance and may not describe how the stove will usually operate.
How many radiators can a boiler stove heat?
It depends on the stove's output to water and the combined output required by the radiators. Divide the usable output to water by the average radiator output for an initial estimate, then allow for hot water and other system demands. Do not use the stove's total output, and have the complete system sized by a competent heating professional.
Can I install a stove into an existing open fireplace?
Sometimes, but the fireplace opening, hearth, chimney, flue, ventilation and clearances must be assessed against the chosen manufacturer's instructions and Irish regulations.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a stove?
Carbon monoxide protection is an important part of stove safety. Follow current Part J guidance and the alarm manufacturer's positioning and maintenance instructions. An alarm never replaces correct installation and ventilation.
Are wood-burning stoves banned in Ireland in 2026?
No nationwide ban on compliant domestic wood-burning stoves has been introduced. New stoves placed on the market must meet relevant Ecodesign and product requirements, and installation and fuel rules still apply.
